Indoor Plants for Beauty and Benefit

It is the time of the year again when regions like Delhi-NCR suffer extreme air pollution. Every year we see record breaking Air Quality Index (AQI) levels which makes it difficult to breathe, not just outdoors but indoors as well. Nowadays, there are air purifiers available but nature has blessed us with plants which as per the Clean Air Study of NASA has the ability to remove toxins from air and make clean.

Here are five easily available indoor plants which is a part of the list which you can buy for your home:

1. Snake Plant: This air purifying plant needs minimum care and is apt for people who forget watering plants. Do not keep it in direct sunlight and water only when the soil is dry.

2. Rubber Plant: This again doesn’t need regular watering or direct sunlight. Keep them in well-lit areas of your home. It looks absolutely stunning multiplying the beauty of your interiors. Do not let dust settle on its leaves, keep the leaves clean and mist it regularly. You can add homemade compost or store-bought fertilizers but make sure to dilute it before adding to the soil.

3. Areca Palm: It majorly needs bright light and humidity. Like the other indoor plants, do not overwater it. They generally do well in the subtropical climate and is safe for babies and pets.

4. Money Plant or Pothos: This is one of my favorites. It is fuss free and easy to propagate from stem cutting. You can easily grow them in soil or water. They need indirect sunlight and clean water both for watering the soil or growing in water. If you are growing them in soil, do not overwater. If you are growing them in water, replace the water in every 5-6 days with clean water. Do not use tap water if it is salty or has high iron content, use filtered water.

5. Spider Plant: This plant requires well lit room and well-drained soil. During summers use light fertilizers up to a maximum of two times in a month. Again, do not overwater them. It is best to mist them regularly to keep them cool as high temperature may cause them to turn brown.

The amount of purification done is still subject to a lot of debate, but we all know a greener place is always more healthier, beautiful and relaxing!
