Makhana Munchies-The Super Snack!

Makhana (also known as Fox Nuts and Lotus Seeds) contains almost zero fat and zero cholesterol but is high in useful nutrients like magnesium, potassium, protein, phosphorous and iron, and a very good source of fiber.

In this blog, I will tell you three quick and easy ways to prepare and flavor Makhana or fox nuts which you can store and munch on whenever you feel like snacking.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 Cups of makhana/fox nuts (for each batch)

  • Ghee or Clarified butter

  • Peanuts

  • Kasoori Methi (Dried fenugreek leaves)

  • Jaggery

  • Salt

  • Red Chilli Powder (Optional)


Makhana with Peanuts: This is the most common way of making makhana in India.

First of all, heat a pan and add a tablespoon of ghee (Clarified Butter). To this, add half a cup of peanuts and fry, once the peanuts are partially fried add in the Makhana and roast it together with the peanuts on low heat for around 3-4 mins. Add salt to taste and mix them together properly. Your makhan with peanuts is ready!


Makhana with Kasoori Methi: In this you may or may not add peanuts. Roast makhana in a pan after adding a tablespoon of ghee, add salt and mix. When it is almost done, crush some dried fenugreek or kasoori methi in between your palms and add it to the makhana. Turn off the gas and cover it with a lid, the standing time would help the flavor of kasoori methi mix well with the makhana.


Makhana with Jaggery: This is a sweeter version of the snack. First few steps are same, add a tablespoon of ghee to a pan, to this add makhana and roast. Crush some jaggery or if you have jaggery powder add around 3-4 tablespoon of it to the makhana and mix, add a pinch of salt and a pinch of red chilli powder (optional) to get an enhanced flavor. Your sweet makhana with a hint of chilli is ready!


Once cooled, you can store it in a air tight container and munch on it whenever you feel like.
